The RASP engine is a wonderful thing and the regular RASP processing creates forecast data that can be sliced or diced in many ways. The RASP Table, Track and Blip Spot utilities provide ways to view the WRF data in differing ways, but there are also other tools that have been created you can use. This page explains the utility that can allow you to use the raw RASP data for a location for a single day.

Get Default RASP Parameters for a Given Location (get_rasp_blipspot.cgi)

This script is responsible for collecting a set of parameters from the RASP core data set.

An example is as follows:

It has the following input parameters:

  • region
  • grid
  • day
  • width
  • height
  • linfo
  • param
  • format
  • lat
  • lon

You can use the defaults as provided in the BlipSpot creator (and in the example above), however there are some parameters that can be amended to provide different output. Note that these are case sensitive so be careful that they are exactly as below in lower case.

Let's take a view at the parameters.


Today's region is actually a period of time, but can be defined as UK12 but it can be:

  • UK12
  • Monday
  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday
  • Thursday
  • Friday
  • Saturday
  • Sunday

So if today is Monday, you can use UK12 or Monday, with the latter. The 2Km data can be for the current day (or tomorrow - when ready). At the same time, Tuesday would be the 4KM data. Wednesday to Sunday would be 12Km data. For other models, the period beyond today varies so check what the model supplies before trying. At 12Km you can use UK12/UK12+1/+2/+3/+4/+5/+6, for 4Km you can use UK4/UK4+1/+2. For 2Km you can use UK2 or UK2+1.


Grid is the RASP window period and is always d2. This should not be changed.


This should be left as the default of 0 (zero). Future use will be for archived data sets from the past.


This should be a valid longitude. West is negative. Must have a decimal such as 52.1.


This should be a valid latitude. South would be negative, except the UK models are all north of the equator.Must have a decimal such as 1.0.


This is used as a width map parameter and should be left as the default of 2000.


This is used as a height map parameter and should be left as the default of 2000.


This is not currently user-configurable and should be left to the default of 1. Note this is the word info with the letter "L for lima" on the front.


The next parameter can be left empty to provide a default list of RASP parameters for the selected co-ordinate. But it can have one or more RASP parameters, with a space between each.

If you wish to have a single parameter (e.g. hwcrit) simply add this to the param field and only this will be searched for (which is faster). If you wish to use two or more (e.g. wstar and rain1), this would be "wstar rain1" as the param= on the full URL.

There are three formats you can use. XML, JSON and ASCII. You can add format=xml for XML, format=json for JSON or omit the format flag (or just empty) for an ASCII table that is human readable.
